Juvenile or 'atopic eczema is present virtually from birth and is often linked to asthma and hayfever which appears later in life.
Eczema can be chronic and dry with red thickening patches which itch. Scratching makes the patches itch worse and so the cycle goes. 'Wet eczema' can be sudden in onset and be acute with blister formation and weeping.
In his book, Aloe Vera, The Medicine Plant, Dr Peter Atherton suggests the following basic treatment.
1/ Do not use soap but an emollient soap substitute instead.
2/ Use a moisturiser to reduce the dryness of the skin which will in turn reduce the itching.
3/ Use an anti-inflammatory creme.
4/ To avoid infection use a topical antibiotic.
He goes on to recommend using a creme containing Aloe Vera for its anti-inflammatory, anti itching properties, Lanolin as a moisturised and bee propolis as a natural antibiotic. Apply three time a day.
Drink Aloe Vera Gel to provide the body with the micro-nutrients required for new strong healthy cell growth.

Case Study
"After using Aloe Vera Propolis Creme twice daily for three or four weeks on our nine year old daughter's eczema, the eczema patches disappeared! However, it did get worse before it got better and it was important that we persevered at that point We understand that was the 'healing chrisis' when the damaged skin cells are pushed up to the surface by the deeper layer of healing skin. We continue to use the creme to keep the condition at bay.
The creme has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, but without the side effects of hydrocortizone cremes. It also moisturises as it heals and is easily absorbed as well, to two jobs are done at once.
The lignins in Aloe carry the creme deep into the dermis, promoting healing from that level. Lighter cremes do not penetrate so far and whilst ointment may do, it is far stickier. Aloe has also been found to leave less scarring in the healing process.
A tube of Aloe Vera is 2 1/2 times the size of a normal tube of prescribed hydrocortizone and is therefore more cost effective than prescription drugs. As a mother, I am quite happy to pay for my children to have a safe and effective alternative to steroid cremes."
